a brief summary of PEACESAT and TIP-G News, Events, and Activities.
The information is not complete and dependent in part on information
provided by PEACESAT Sites.

May 19, 1999 --
UNIVERSITY OF GUAM PEACESAT HUB SITE -- The UOG received a grant
from the Public Telecommunications Facilities Program of the U.S.
Department of Commerce in 1996 for a PEACESAT Hub Site. Upon receipt
of the grant, the UOG PEACESAT quickly took action to build the Hub
Site. Unfortunately, just as testing between Guam and Hawaii was
to commence, super Typhoon Paka destroyed the earth station.
In May, Norman Okamura visited the UOG PEACESAT and found that the earth station was restored;
but, that testing revealed that the HPAs were not working well. The
signal level was very low. The receive gain was excellent.
PEACESAT UH plans
to dispatch a team in June with a 100w HPA to ensure that the system
is operating.
May
1999 -- PACIFIC TELEHEALTH -- Norman Okamura, Principal Investigator
of PEACESAT traveled with Thomas M. Driskill, the President of the
Hawaii Health
Systems Corporation, and Mr. Arnold Baptiste, President of the Hawaii
Management Alliance Association (HMAA). The purpose of the trip to
Palau, Guam, Saipan, Chuuk and Pohnpei was to discuss opportunities
for telehealth and telemedicine, the successes of the Third Party
Administration program of the HMAA with the Republic of the Marshall
Islands and American Samoa, and the nature of the medical care provider
system of the HHSC.
May 1999 -- ADAP
PROGRAM -- Jim Hollyer, Director of the Agricultural Development
for the American Pacific, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human
Resources, University of Hawaii, implemented a video teleconferencing
connection to the State of Hawaii Telehealth Access Network.
May
13, 1999 -- COLLEGE OF MARSHALL ISLANDS -- Mr. Ernest Shima (UH
TIPG and PEACESAT), Dr. Andrew Kuniyuki, Mr. Ed Tomasu (UH PEACESAT)
tested
a 128 Kbps link using the 3m antenna at the College of the Marshall
Islands with the UH 10m link. PEACESAT plans to demonstrate video
teleconferencing in the Marshall Islands in June 1999.
February
26, 1999 -- AMERICAN SAMOA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION - The DOE
received an award of $3.5 million from the Schools and Libraries
Program (SLP),
established by the Federal Communications Commission in accordance
with the Telecommunications Act of 1996. The TIPG and PEACESAT helped
with the initial preparation of system specifications in 1998.
